Just messing with the heavy bag.....

Guess what I will have waiting for me when I get home tonight???

My very own Heavy Bag!!!!  WOOO HOOO!!!

When I found out from a friend that her kickboxing/karate school was selling their used heavy bags at a huge discount, I jumped on it!  I have always wanted to own one for home to beat on practice on, man I am super excited!  Luckily my husband was on board, in fact plans on using it himself!  Since my daughter is starting karate (little dragons) classes in the next few months, I thought it would be good for her to practice at home too!

Thanks Mindy for letting me know about it and Eric for bringing it out to me!!!!  You guys ROCK and made my week!!!! I OWE YOU!!!

Foods for today

Pre-breakfast:  Click protein drink on the way to work
Breakfast: Whole wheat waffle with peanut butter and banana slices, the other half of the banana made into a peanut butter/banana sandwich...um yum!

Lunch:  tuna salad on a whole wheat sandwich thin, and Snapea Crips (baked peapods).  These babies are amazing!  It's a great healthy alternative from chips.  A lot of times I crave something crunchy with a soft sandwich and these are healthy, flavorful and good for you!  You need to try them.  I find them in the produce section of my supermarket, Trader Joes, and Job Lot also sometimes carry them. Do it.

Snack:  orange & cottage cheese

Dinner:  Paula Deens Pulled Pork on a whole wheat sandwich thin.  It's in the crock pot...bet the house smells amazing!

I will be eating dinner later than usual tonight as I have to food shop for our upcoming camping trip!

Have a great night!!

Question:  How often would you use a heavy bag if it were in your house?

Fly Away Beautiful Butterflies!

Our butterflies hatched this weekend! First we noticed just one....
and soon.....

they all were hatched!  We never really saw them crawling out of their cocoons, they were just there next time we walked by and happened to peek!  We gave them some orange slices and sugar water, which the kit said they really like.  I never saw them near the water, but I did see them on the orange a few times.  I ended up taking the water out of their enclosure because I could not find the directions on how much water to give them, and was terrified that if I gave them too much, I would find one floating.  So, I just gave them the orange slices after that!  I did not want to have to explain them beginning and ending a life in the same day to my daughter!

After a couple days, we decided to let them go live outside in our garden.  I've been told that a lot of times they will come back to your yard too.  I hope so, I feel like these little guys are our family!  ;)

Right away one flu right out, but the other 4 needed to be assisted.  We ended up pushing the bottom of the enclosure up to assist them into flight.  They must have really been happy in there!  It was a really cool experience for my daughter to see them change from caterpillars to cocoons to beautiful butterflies!

Eats

Today I am struggling with feeling very hungry... can't stand those days!  Here's what I've got planned.

Pre-Breakfast: Hot Click Protein drink
Breakfast: Blood orange chobani greek yogurt, fiber one cereal sprinkled in for crunch
Lunch: ham & cheese on a whole wheat sandwich thin, peanut butter crackerful a little while later
Snack: orange may have a banana too
Dinner: Mexican chicken (basically like chicken parm but with salsa and mex cheese), green beans, salad
Snack: frozen Yasso greek yogurt bar

Make it a great day!!

Question
What do you do on days you don't want to over eat but feel hungry all day?  Any tips?  (I try to eat salads, because I can chew a lot and feel like I am feeding that craving to eat a lot of food!)

Get Your Body Movin! ~ Motivating Quotes

Do you ever feel like not working out and you just want to go home, put your pj's on and just do nothing?  But, even though it sounds good at that moment, don't you feel guilty, lazy then eat things you know aren't good for you?  If not, you aren't normal and go back to your regularly scheduled programming....weirdo! ;) Comon.... we're Human!

What I find that works for me most is just putting myself in a mindset that I am almost in autopilot.... I just go and do it.  Have you ever heard that quote, "You'll never regret a workout?"  I've been saying that a lot lately... I think it is true.  I ALWAYS am glad I went, even when I felt like going home to bed!

Here are a bunch of motivational quotes I've found that I really like and help me to read now and then.  I hope someone that was going to skip their workout tonight, reads these and decides "screw it... I am going!" :)

"No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everyone on the couch!"

"You will never regret a workout"

"It doesn't get easier, you get stronger!"

"You're only one workout away from a good mood!"

"focus on how far you’ve come… not how far you have to go"

"It's supposed to be hard.  If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it.  The hard….is what makes it great"

"If you still look cute at the end of a workout, then you didn't train hard enough"

"I may not be there yet, but I am closer than I was yesterday"

People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we
recommend it daily.
 ~Zig Zigler

The Greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.
~Moliere - French Playwright

When the world says, 'Give up,' hope whispers, 'Try it one more time.'

A Day in My Tummy

On my way to work, I usually have a "protein coffee"  more on that later...love those. You need to try it, keeps you satisfied for hours! no lie.

BUT, I had been fortunate enough to get my hands on some Click Protein !! Well, got my Mom & myself some for Mother's Day (she's a fan too). So proud of my Mom, she's lost over 80 lbs and is doing such a incredible job!  She says I am her inspiration, but really she and my daughter are mine.

Ok, back to Click....it tastes like a Mocha coffee drink from Starbucks but better for you!  I love it hot and cold, today I had it warmed up......yummmmmm!  It's INCREDIBLE on ice too.  Next week they are starting to sell decaffeinated Click!  So, now I can have it at night!!!  WOO HOOOOO!!!!!!

A couple hours after that, I had a apple cinnamon Chobani greek yogurt and some Fiber One cereal in it (for crunch).  It tastes like apple pie!  Really. It. Is. Good!
I forgot to take a photo of my lunch, but I had 3 homemade meat balls in sauce on a whole wheat sandwich thin.

Just about an hour ago, I ate a juicy orange.  Tonight is my two hour workout classes, so I am having one of these for dinner.
I am ALWAYS hungry after working out for two hours so I am sure I will have something when I get home, probably a protein shake, or a banana with peanut butter. (love peanut butter.....drool!)

Oh, I saw this the other day and thought it was cute! ;)

Have a great day!!

Question for today?

Do you have a favorite Protein Drink?

Martial Arts Etiquette

Learning the Dojo's etiquette is one of the first things you need to do when you start at a karate school.  In my new school, one of the rules is that you must learn the student creed, 5 codes of Tang Soo Do, and more to receive a patches for your uniform.  This is in addition to the skills needed to move up in belt rank.  In our school it is these to begin with:

Student Creed

I Will develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that could
reduce my mental growth or physical health.
I Will develop self-discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others.
I will use common sense before self-defense and never be abusive or offensive.

5 Codes of Tang Soo Do
Be loyal to ones country.
Be obedient to parents and elders.
Honor Friendship.
Never retreat in battle.
In fighting, choose with sense and honor.

Also,  we have Tenets of Tang Soo Do which are painted on the walls of the Dojo:
Integrity
Concentration
Perseverance
Respect and Obedience
Self-Control
Humility
Indomitable Spirit

I really respect this school and the way they teach.  I love that they have a clear mission and do their best to make your training a positive experience.  Here is their mission according to their handbook:

To Change the World One Student at a Time! The school approaches this mission with constant in-service staff and teaching team training,
outside evaluations and certifications, and constant feedback from our clients. We strive to
integrate the best of the martial arts traditions with the goals of modern living, and we sacrifice
anything that hinders our fulfillment of our mission with our students.

Besides the mandatory rules like 8 classes a month needed to move up in belts, etc.  Most schools have a etiquette that each student must follow.  These are important and must be observed.  I believe it is important that you read these and agree to them prior to joining a karate school since these definitely give you a idea of your schools atmosphere and culture.  Not all karate schools are created equal and it is important to check out a few different schools before you join.  It took me a while to find a new one when I moved, it was important to me to find one I was comfortable with and wanted to stay with for a long time.  After all karate classes is a huge investment, not only financially but with who you are and who you want to surround your self with.  I also wanted to make sure I really like the children's programs since I am wanting my daughter to start taking classes soon.  I really like the instructors here, and have seen the way they teach the children as well as adults.  Here is the Dojang etiquette for our school:

Dojang Etiquette
􀂾 You should arrive for class 10 minutes prior to class time to ensure that you are dressed and prepared for
class.
􀂾 You should not wear ANY jewelry in class to prevent injury to yourself or others.
􀂾 If you wear a tee shirt under your uniform, it should be white or black, to match your uniform top. No
collared shirts or turtlenecks should be worn under the uniform. Long pants may not be worn under your
uniform.
􀂾 You should NEVER wash your belt. According to tradition, all your karate knowledge resides in your belt, and laundering it would wash away the knowledge.
􀂾 All students should remove their belts before leaving the dojang. If you are a teen or adult student, or a
black belt of any age, you should not wear your belt or uniform top outside of the dojang.
􀂾 You must bow when entering or leaving the teaching floor.
􀂾 You must take at least 8 classes each month to be eligible for stripe testing. No exceptions will be made.
If you do not have enough classes, see an instructor about making up the time.
􀂾 In order to prevent injury, never show your karate to people outside the school.
􀂾 Your Floor Director must approve demonstrations outside the school.
􀂾 You may not attend a tournament without your instructor’s permission.
􀂾 No food, drinks, or gum on the rug. Snacks must stay on the tile floor. Only water may be on the floor
during class.
􀂾 Only Black Belts may sit in chairs or on benches in the dojang. Gups (students with white or colored belts) must sit on the floor or remove their belt.
􀂾 There are no first names in the karate school. All students and staff are addressed by their title (Mr., Mrs.,
Miss, Ms. Dr.) and their last name.
􀂾 Students should bring their sparring gear (includes wearing a protective cup for all male students) and
weapons to every class.
􀂾 During a class, students should ask permission from an instructor before leaving the floor.
􀂾 For the safety of all students, we ask parents not to come onto the floor or call to students or instructors
during class.
􀂾 STARS sheets are required for all Karate Kids to Stripe Test.
􀂾 Students need a full uniform and their current belt for Graduation and Stripe Testing
􀂾 Bags should be stowed neatly during class.
􀂾 Please scan your card and put it in the basket before class.
􀂾 Save your coins to buy PSCL or awesome prizes!!

Mother's Day at Sturbridge Village!

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone had a fantastic Mother's Day!  My sisters, my daughter, our old family friend took our Mom's to Old Sturbridge Village.  We first had reservations for brunch at Oliver Wright Tavern.  I have to say, we all agreed that it was one of the best buffet brunches we have ever been to!
The best dish I had on my massive plate was the roasted turkey.  All of us were raving about it.  It must have been brined, because it was so moist and succulent as well as full of flavor.  It was my fav!  As you can see my eyes were obviously bigger than my stomach, but I wanted to try a few bites of everything.  I didn't even make a dent in the amount of different foods that this buffet offered.

My daughters plate was a waffle loaded with candy and some grapes.  She enjoyed the buffet as well.  She really liked that the chocolate fountain dessert table has marshmallows, so she could get some for her hot chocolate!
After eating, we went into the Village to walk around.  I don't remember going there before, but my sisters remember going when we were young.  I may have been too young to remember.

There was so much to see, I want to go back when we have more time in the morning.  Since our reservations for brunch was at 1:30pm, by the time we were done and went to walk around, it was getting towards the end of the day there.  Even still we had such a great time, and being all together was a treat.

It was really neat to go for a stagecoach ride around the common.  My daughter could not believe that this was how people traveled before cars!
These lambs were just born weeks ago, one was one week old and one three weeks old.  We also met 4 sheep that were all pregnant and ready to give birth at any time...so cool!  We saw pigs, cows, chickens and cattle as well.  That's my favorite part as well as speaking to all the period actors about their daily tasks.

We had a great day!

Lemon Bars - weightloss surgery friendly!

I Love these lemon bars.  They make me feel normal when I bring them to a party!  These are delicious.  I bought the maltitol powder, which is just like powered sugar here.  You can use this for pretty much anything powered sugar is used for.

I got the recipe here

Lemon Bars
I love lemon and this is a delicious no sugar version that is perfect to take to a holiday office party or family barbeque. Very tart with a buttery crust!

¾ cup plus 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
¾ cup almond flour
1 ½ cups Nature Sweet or Whey Low sugar replacer (Splenda, not so good, but do-able)
4 tablespoons butter
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon table salt
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
½ cup fresh lemon juice (about 2 lemons)
3 large eggs
Preheat oven to 350˚ and lightly coat an 8 inch square pan with cooking spray.

Pulse almond flour, all purpose flour, ½ cup of the Nature Sweet, and butter in food processor until mixture resembles coarse meal. Press into prepared pan and bake 18 to 20 minutes, until crust is golden and firm to the touch.

Combine remaining 1 cup Nature Sweet, 3 tablespoons flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Add lemon juice, lemon rind, and eggs, whisking until smooth. Pour mixture over crust. Bake 14 to 16 minutes, until set. Remove from oven; cool in pan on a wire rack. Cut into 25 squares (5 x 5). Dust with additional Nature Sweet or Whey Low.

Makes twenty five, 1½ inch squares
Calories 73, Fat 5gr, Carbs 4gr, Protein 2gr

make these.  you won't regret it!

Last nights work out

It was grrrreat!!!!

I can't even tell you how much I love being back in Martial Arts again!  So, I took the kickboxing class and then the karate class after.

I love that every single class if different and yet you get such a great workout!

Kickboxing Class: So we did a lot of drills and cardio along with push ups, squats, jogging.  But my favorite part of the class was when we had to knee the pad holding onto the person (for control), while another person was pushing us with another pad.  It was supposed to simulate a real fight and the chaotic-ness that happens ( a real fight is not neat and clean).  It was a great workout...  took me a while to catch my breath after my turn!

Karate Class:  Even though I have my black belt, I still am learning a whole new style, so I am considered a white belt here.  I do line up with the black belts though and wear my black belt since I earned it.  So, because I just started these classes at this school a week ago, I am still getting looked at pretty funny by some of the other students.  Yea, that's me lining up with the black belt, but when they say "beginners go here", I go.  I am happy to and love learning and going over all the basic stances, kicks and punches.  Even though, I know them it doesn't mean I can't use the basics again....we all need to go over basics now and then.  So far, I've been to 3 of their classes and I am having such fun!  Last week I started nun chucks and I am super excited about that because I have never learned a weapon before. They alternate each week weapons and sparring (my favorite thing!!!).  They do self-defense and forms, cardio and conditioning in every class but weapons and sparring are alternated each week.  I think that's cool.  So, this week I sparred for the first time in ages.  I love it and I am so psyched to do it again!  I just need to get used to the mouth guard again, as I can't stop gagging! :)

I left the Dojo feeling great, I can't wait for next Tues.  I have to miss Saturday morning this week because my daughter has recital pictures.  Life happens.

Today's Eats

I try to eat every 2-3 hours to keep myself on the right track and not to make unhealthy choices

Breakfast: Sorry, I didn't snap a photo of my breakfast this morning, it was sooooo delicious!  It was a spinach & cheese omelet.  I told my hubby that this is what I wanted for Mother's Day since it was so good.  He and my daughter are planning to make me a breakfast in bed anyway, so why not put in a request, right??  I just hope it's not too early and I get to sleep in at least till 8am! ;)

Lunch:  Again was yummy...  It was a grilled chicken breast with cheddar cheese, sliced tomatoes and avocado on a low carb whole wheat wrap.  I couldn't believe that I could almost eat the whole thing.  It is definitely going to keep me full for a while which I am glad about!  I need to eat more food that are dense proteins like that.  The longer it takes my body to digest the longer it takes for my body to feel hungry again.

Afternoon Snack:  I plan to have an orange later after a cup of decaf tea and maybe some water.

Dinner:  I am not sure, I have to food shop tonight.  I probably will pick up a easy frozen pizza for the family, and maybe a salad with some rotisserie chicken on it for me.  They get sick of chicken and salad... I don't usually.

What do you like to get for dinner on food shopping nights that is super easy??

Making Butterflies!

I know you are thinking....ewwwwww....grosss!!!!  But wait, I thought it was going to be too, but it's really cool!  I promise.

My Mother In Law had got my daughter a "grow your own butterfly kit".  You send away for the caterpillars which come tiny in this little jar, you let them grow in here (the food comes in the bottom of it), then once the cocoon, you move them into a pop-up enclosure that comes with the kit until they break free and are then butterflies!  Then we get to set them free!

It is really amazing and so cool that my daughter get's to watch daily what is happening.  I really am thankful that my Mother In Law decided to get it, it is so cool!

This is one of my all time favorite poems, infact it came on a birthday card I was given by a good friend Leah the year that I had weight loss surgery and was going through a lot of mental and physical changes in my life.  I still have it hanging on my desk.

it says:

"Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly"

I love that.

Getting Started....

Well, I am looking for a place to record my martial arts training, food habits & share recipes, talk about family and raising a young daughter.  Let me start out sharing a bit of my background...  I am 39 years old, a Mom to a beautiful 5 yr old girl, married for 13 years, and a black belt in Ty Kwon Do.  I am now studying Tang Soo Do here, I have been taking the CDF (Cadio Defense Fitness) mostly a kickboxing type class there for a while now and just started taking their karate classes because I missed it.  It has been over two years since I've studied martial arts because I just couldn't find a school I really felt comfortable in.  I really enjoy this school, the instructors are great, and the students are like a family (which is what my school was like I trained in for my black belt).  It truly does make a difference in your overall training if you love your school!

Over two years ago I had weight loss surgery because I had got obese and could not lose the weight on my own no matter what diet I tried.  I would lose a few pounds here and there but never kept it off, I would yoyo back and forth.  Anyone that has delt with weight problems can certainly relate I bet.  So, when my doctor told me I had less than 3% chance losing 100 pounds (which is how much I needed to lose) on my own, I was mortified.  I was also told that I would have diabetes in less than 5 years.  At that point thinking of my daughter and not wanted to be a Mom that could not play or run around with her, I knew something drastic HAD to be done.  I asked my doctor about weight loss surgery.  I was told that I would not be a candidate for the lap band because I was a "sweet eater" (addicted to sugar).  What I needed was gastric bypass surgery.  I went to the weight center I was referred to and after a year long wait and going through classes, therapists, and learning how my body would be changed forever, I had the surgery.  It saved my life and changed my life for the better.  I have now lost over 100 lbs and I am now maintaining my weight.  It will be a battle for the rest of my life, but I will NEVER go back to being obese again!

Nutrition....  I am now out far enough from surgery that I can eat everything in small amounts.  I have to be super careful with sugar because I am still addicted and could easily allow too much.  If I eat too much sugar, I feel terrible, sometimes so bad I have to lay down.  It makes me feel sick to my stomach and I remind myself why I needed this surgery.  I try to live with balance.  I try to eat the best I can 80% of the time.  Protein first, then vegetable, and limit sugar and bad carbs, and drink lots of water!  I do still have the occasional piece of chocolate (like my title suggests, I am also a chocoholic!)  I will always be.  If I am smart about it, I can still live in balance with chocolate!

I'd like to stay accountable here, and share some ramblings and info I learn along the way.

Do any of you find a balance with eating right and still indulging, and what do you do?
